My website is undergoing a huge overhaul, and once that's done, this particular blog will be utilized only for updates made to the site, with my actual blog being hosted under a different name.

I've still been mega busy on that large contract. Also I didn't mention before, but my laptop died! Along with it went much of my 2011 archived work in progress... always back up, folks!

Anyway, it's E3 week. Lots of exciting things happening. MAss Effect 3, Halo 4 and Combat Evolved Remastered, Fable, and a whole lot of neat looking Kinect things to try!

...But it's all about the Mass Effect at the moment, so here's this random Turian guy ;)

Street urchin kid I drew while watching the movie 'Perfume' (good movie) I may visit this kid again. He's pretty stock right now.

Ookami from 'The Refuge' in some revised formal wear from the 'Mass Effect 2' game! Ookami's not himself without a dash of red on his person.

Animatic and News!

I'm such a space case. I had almost forgotten to post the completed animatic I was asked to work on early this year in the summer!

I was in charge of character designs-simplifying them from book illustrations (Provided by Blotch Inc.) as well as working out all the keyframe drawings and poses. All done in Flash CS!
As well as backgrounds for two of the scenes. (The locker room, and the community center)

My buddy, best friend and coworker Donovan Howard provided storyboards, shot list, timing, and the rest.

This was a journey for the two of us, and it was a great challenge. Expect to see this as a temporary replacement to my Demo Reel on site, going live shortly after this post.

As for NEWS;
I've been asked to join another friend of mine in an upstart gaming company as a concept artist. Not much else can be said now, but it's another labor of love position, but it promises to be a great fun learning process!

The release of Fable 3 has brought out my inner concept artist guy. And the recent, snowy turn of the weather put me in the mood.

Just a quick thing. It looks faded, yeah, but bringing in more colours and contrast took away from the mindset I had for it.

Retooling

I've been rather quiet on the posting front. Both in blog and on my website. No good. A lot has been happening, and a lot still needs to happen since I'm retooling my demo reel/portfolio to suit my recent decision.

Animators are supposed to animate. I haven't been able to practice my craft, not extensively. It would be unfair to continue marketing myself as an animator until I provide newer content. It's in the works, just not at present. Until then I am simply a Character Artist and Illustrator.

Also here is some more artwork I have done recently;

I decided to perhaps be naughty and show a bit of work I've done for the freelance project still keeping me busy!

Just some ambiguous tiger studies! Mwahahaa.

And here's a couple of pages from the webcomic I work on in what I loosely refer to as my 'spare time'.

I'm responsible for page layout and initial sketches, my wife comes in to do her character work (mainly with the women) and then ink, colour and letter. These particular pages I'm most pleased with the layouts.

More recently I've been inspired by Manga, one in particular has a really solid visual style of storytelling. Pages so strong that they act like storyboards. It makes it very compelling. I'm going to try and bring that into my work more often.

Anyway. back to work!

Also we've had a friend from Australia up to visit us! We've been showing him what Alberta and the Canadian Rockies have to offer.

Also I'm Jazzed about Ubisoft's announcement of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood multiplayer. I've got nothing but love for the AC franchise, but this means I have to eventually change the name of my in-production graphic novel.

Internet Issues

My Mac Powerbook G4 has been experiencing recent 'rolling internet' black outs where suddenly-amidst lots of browsing and busybodying- FireFox will just stop loading anything, and nothing internet related will work.

I connect with the AirPort wifi and this problem began on Friday the 23rd. The other computers in the house were having the same issues so I assumed it would pass.
Today, it's just me.

Cache/history cleared, network configure/reconfiguring, etc... Nothing seems to have resolved the issue. Internet tech support found no problem with the connection itself and suggested I call Apple to get a better diagnostic.

Since their business hours are over, I instead have to manually turn on/off my AirPort to hard boot the internet connection every time it stalls.

So! That has made more serious updates rather inconvenient to do.
Otherwise I have been keeping busy. You all just can't... see it yet because of these limitations!

More on that when the situation develops!

Well, I had a lovely interview with the awesome people over at Cadillac Jack Inc.!

To repeat myself- they were an awesome group of people and I'm feeling pretty good about how things went.

One thing mentioned was the desire to see more finished things from me. That's one thing I want to see from me too, animation wise. It doesn't help that my demo-reel is already pretty out dated for my tastes!

So I got home and I keyed out this animation I have planned to add to the website;

"A Roman Invasion" ... ray guns... get it?
... Yeah well. Something I thumb nailed on my flight back to GA anyway! Roll with it!

Birthday dinner with my mom (her birthday) then I'll plan this out even more.

Waking Sleeping Beauty

Last night I had the pleasure if screening Waking Sleeping Beauty at the Atlanta location of S.C.A.D. I'll jump straight to photos;

My friend Donovan Howard(right) with the film's producer, Peter Schneider(center). The fellow in the back got caught in there.

Donovan again, Lee Crowe, and myself on the right. It was my first time seeing her again since I got back from Canada. Lee is a fantastic friend, and was a good Mentor, professor, and my former Boss at the Art Institute of Atlanta. Both Donovan and I had the pleasure of being her Teacher's Assistants for her Intro to 2d Animation course.

And this next photo was one I honestly did not expect to happen;

Myself with voice actress Jodi Benson. She provided the voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid.
While I was aware that she lived in Georgia, I wasn't aware that she would attend!

Overall, the movie explored areas the other documentaries don't show. It wasn't all light hearted, it wasn't all gloom either. Really, it outlined the perfect storm of events that created the brief Renaissance within Disney Animation from 1986 to 1995.

For me, I took away that feeling of that burning fire. That drive and passion that has been fueling my craft and I for this long. I was moved, for varying reasons, most of which were my own personal values.

It's hard to describe. It was a great event and I'm glad I had the chance to go.

Photoshop

A commission milestone anyhow. Manymanymanymany lines in the Spartan Armor, and many renderings do not agree where those lines should be, so I did a little half and half. The action figure on my desk helped too.

My website is also about 64% complete with the redesign. It should be live very soon. Hopefully I'll be able to integrate my blog into it for easy update notification!

Looking back on it today and thinking about it and doing more observing; I realized my colours were way too dull. The image proved muddy and unclear to the people I showed it to.

I punched up the colours by Photoshop leveling and will continue this way, making bolder colour choices.

My gut instinct colours were still a decent base to build off of, so at least that's something.

I wasn't in the mood for conventional work today, so I began working on a simple animation. This is just a screen grab, so don't worry if he doesn't move :) He's still got a ways to go.

My Flash drawing has improved a lot, and I'm glad that I'm not *so* rusty when it comes to basic Flash animation.

I'd still take pencil and paper over it any day of the week, though.

I figured sharing a page from the comic I help work on "requiem mask" would be most relevant.

I do all the rough layout sketching and composition of panels/pages, then my wife tweaks and works with them as she cleans up the lines, as well as the colour and lettering!

This is an earlier page, but also a 'milestone' page in which, I think, our comic really found it's look.

I felt inspired to do so after being led to Stephen Gordon's work. I loved X-Men Evolution when it came out, and I never realized that he was the sole character designer!

I'm also in the process of trying to redesign my website. I'm already sick of the one I have now. It's just so boring, really. I hope to launch it with the new look soon with the help of a friend and really pull together my image.

an interesting challenge. The same area as the previous piece, in greater darkness. The electrical box could actually be partially seen when I began, but I didn't catch it in time.

I also tried doing this without my glasses on, much like how I treat gesture drawings.

Without my glasses, I'm forced to concentrate on the gesture rather than the details. So here, I'm forced to concentrate on the colours that create what I see.

just looked out the window. This was kinda tricky, a storm rolled in really fast so I really had to try and catch what I saw.

I need to be more daring with colour, so I'm trying to do some 'speed painting' with little things that come into my head. I know this particular piece is sort of a study for a commission with this type of background.

Not much, but it'll be fun to track progression!

I thought it about time to make a character sheet for the little guy that's posted everywhere around my website!

This little piece is from a story I'm working on privately. Just something that came up in mind that I had to get out of my head-and certainly something I plan on going back to and finishing in full when I'm able to.

I'm in Canada now, and now that I'm also more settled in, I'll be applying for jobs in the area.

Sorry folks! My trip to Florida has come and gone, and I am once again traveling on wednesday.

I'm headed to Canada! Possibly for the long haul! But first there is a friend's wedding I must attend. Updates will be more frequent once things have been stable. I've been getting my funds secure and my affairs in order.

Vacation Time!

Updates have been pretty slow as of late.

Just graduating and getting on my feet, my fiancee' in town, and now she and I are headed on a trip to Florida on Friday this week!

So suffice it to say I'll be quiet for the next few weeks as I enjoy myself!

Catch you all on the other side folks. I'll see if I can bring back an awesome Disney souvenir!

The new quarter has begun and I've been put in charge as a lead animator for a project. Huzzah! Incidentally, it's kept me busy some.

My work stuffs as of earlier in the week.

Here's a couple more sketches I've had sitting around with me that I thought might be interesting to put up.
A series of private commissions to be grouped into one large group piece, featuring the theme of the game Team Fortress 2 as an animal cast!

At first I was confused because I hadn't played the game before, but I said hey, bring it on! And here are a couple of my favorites so far:

This one, I think, wins favorite :)

Closely followed by this, of course.

I'm having a lot of fun experimenting with something new-at least to me- and the challenge of incorporating animal characteristics as part of the designs and shaped seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to branch out a bit.
